In the Avengers franchise, Thanos was seen in the film Avengers: Infinity War. He sought all six infinity stones, including the Space, Mind, Reality, Power, and Time stones. In the outset of the film, he discovered the space stone Loki had hidden in Asgard. While he obtained the remaining four from separate encounters, he already possessed a Power Stone.

The Power Stone was last seen in Guardians of the Galaxy on Xandar. According to Jim Starlin, Avengers: Infinity War would have depicted Thanos acquiring the stone in Xandar following a 45-minute conflict. The 45 minutes of Thanos that we had at the beginning of ‘Infinity War’ were cut.’

Jim told the Near Mint Condition, “About a month before the film’s release, Joe Russo sent me an email or something saying, ‘The 45 minutes of Thanos that we had at the beginning of ‘Infinity War’ were cut.'” There was an entire sequence of him acquiring the first gem that had to be deleted.

Jim Starlin added that the sequences were filmed, but did not make the final cut. They didn’t want to expend money on special effects, and they didn’t want the film to be as long as the second installment [‘Endgame’]. They did not anticipate that it would be such a success.

According to comic book lore, the original intention of the filmmakers was to dedicate Avengers: Infinity War to Thanos and tell the audience his origin story. However, they decided against it to save money and resources.
