EU inspectors attend Lebanon central bank governor corruption hearing – court sources 2023
According to two legal sources, the governor of Lebanon’s central bank, Riad Salameh, was present at a court hearing in Beirut on Thursday with European investigators who are looking into the possibility that he misappropriated millions of dollars worth of public cash.
It is the first time Salameh has appeared in front of French and German judicial officials. Salameh’s 30-year tenure at the central bank is set to come to an end this summer. A previous session on Wednesday was delayed on procedural grounds after Salameh’s lawyer objected to the presence of French and German judicial officials.
Salameh has stated that he is innocent of any wrongdoing and that the claims are an attempt to make him the scapegoat for Lebanon’s deteriorating economic situation.
