Freeform’s ‘Grown-ish’ Cancelled After Season 6 2023

Freeform’s Grown-ish spinoff will finish after its sixth season. The Disney-owned basic cable network said Wednesday that the last season will run in two parts: the first half this summer and the second half in 2024.

“We’ve spent almost a decade telling our stories through the -ish series, and to say it has been an extraordinary journey would be an understatement,” Barris said in a statement announcing the announcement.

Kenya Barris’ –ish universe ends.

“Watching Yara, Marcus, and our whole Grown-ish family grow up in front of (and often alongside) us over these last several years has been both a delight and an honor. From the tales we’ve told to the talent we’ve cultivated and, most importantly, the memories we’ve built, I couldn’t be prouder of all we’ve done and the -ish family I’ve been a part of.”

Barris’ Black-ish universe concludes in Grown-ish. The eight-season Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross sitcom received many Emmy nominations before ending last year. Grown-ish, starring flagship actress Yara Shahidi, was conceived by Barris for ABC but was too young for the broadcast network and was bought up by Freeform. As Black-ish ended, Shahidi joined the sitcom, which included Marcus Scribner in season five.

Once the show’s plot leaned toward a shorter lifespan, sources claim Grown-ish was creatively canceled. In its last season, the comedy will surpass 100 episodes, a feat few Peak TV series, especially on Freeform, achieve.

Grown-ish ends the –ish saga, which featured ABC prequel spinoff Mixed-ish (which was canceled after two seasons). In 2020, ABC was developing another spinoff, Old-ish, starring Laurence Fishburne and Jenifer Lewis, which Disney-owned Hulu may order to series. In April, Barris told THR that Hulu was exploring a fourth episode in the franchise, but sources say the streamer has no plans to make Old-ish.

ABC Signature produces Grown-ish. Barris, showrunner Craig Doyle, Shahidi, Anderson, Fishburne, Helen Sugland, E. Brian Dobbins, and Michael Petok executive produce.

Besides Grown-ish, Freeform’s scripted lineup includes The Fosters spinoff Good Trouble, Cruel Summer, Single Drunk Female, While You Were Breeding, and The Watchful Eye.

With Disney’s newest restructure under Dana Walden, former president of originals Simran Sethi, now ABC’s exec vp scripted programming, will run Freeform. In mid-2020, Disney hired former Freeform president Tara Duncan to lead Onyx Collective.
