Alex Cooper of Call Her Daddy Reveals Engagement Details 2023

In 2018, 28-year-old Alex Cooper became famous as the host of the Call Her Daddy podcast. Cooper has frankly recounted the romantic ups and downs of dating in her twenties and all the turmoil that comes with being a young lady to the Daddy Gang.

Her star guests, candid relatability, and intimate audience relationship helped her secure a $60 million Spotify deal in 2021. She’s been the streamer’s second-most-listened-to podcast since joining, sometimes surpassing The Joe Rogan Experience.

Cooper is honest, yet she keeps some things to herself. Her connection with Matt Kaplan, her fiancé. She met Ace Entertainment CEO Kaplan on a Zoom business call in 2020 and started dating him. Cooper discussed their connection on the pod, calling the 39-year-old Mr. Sexy Zoom Man. Now engaged, Cooper discusses their relationship.

Cooper told W over Zoom about Kaplan’s March 3 proposal at their Los Angeles home and how she eventually accepted marriage. She handed out her huge 1920s oval cut diamond ring.

Did you expect an engagement?

Matt and I talked about having kids, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to marry. I never wanted to marry a man and live happily ever after. Many of my marriages are unhealthy and unstable. I refuse to settle like others. However, once our relationship reached that point, I knew I wanted to marry Matt. I told him he could propose anytime during a November date night at Giorgio Baldi. He smiled because he accepted that we might not get married.

From November to March, he proposed. How was the proposal?

I thought we were shooting W at my West Hollywood studio. The shoot felt aimless, and everyone was stalling. I didn’t realize that my publicist and Matt set up a phony photoshoot to get me out of the home, out of my sweats, and in hair, makeup, and nails so I’d be delighted with the images. That night, my house was filled with candles, music, and a scavenger hunt that ended with Matt proposing.

Scavenger hunt results?

The computer says “play me.” The video showed Matt in the same clothing as our first Zoom meeting. He then requested me to open the card and continue the scavenger hunt around the house.

What were the hints?

Each room was themed. The kitchen contained almost 30 framed images of our firsts—first dating, first trip to Santa Barbara, first puppy. Our memories were in every room. Champagne and a “Meet me down by the Buddha” card were the final clues.

The woman who lived here before us installed a 500-pound Buddha in the courtyard, and we’re convinced we can’t remove it—bad luck. He was there with our two dogs in bowties. “You’re my soulmate, the love of my life,” he added, kneeling. You improve me. Kindly marry me. Blacked out. Yes, initially. Very surreal.

What altered your marriage mind?

Our early communication—even overcommunication—about challenging topics was amazing. We got through life together because of our honesty and trust. We also have crazy chemistry. He supports my career too. My success intimidated many men. They tried to stop me or shame me. Matt’s been my biggest fan. It’s desirable for a man to not be intimidated by a woman’s extreme achievement.

Would he appear on the podcast?

Oh my. No full-length interview right now. Who knows? I never believed I would reveal his identity or upload a photo of us. I’m now.

Though open, you’ve kept your private life, especially this relationship, secret. Should your relationship be public?

I was so honest when I started this podcast that it may have hurt my personal life. I would run into the studio to talk about what happened the night before. I didn’t even process. I’ve finally discovered a balance between sharing and respecting my relationship. This perfectly illustrates my industry maturity. I want to inform the Daddy Gang since they’re my everything. But saying his name aloud seems strange. Mr. Sexy Zoom Man is my habit.

How does he feel about going public with your millions of fans?

Though private, Matt adores the Daddy Gang. How’s the episode going? Like it? He accepts it since it’s my life. I’m trusted.

How has professional romance shaped your marriage views?

Call Her Daddy’s authenticity is why it’s so successful. I’ve learnt that accepting imperfection is the first step to living well. Social media comparisons aren’t allowed. Relationships might feel like fairy tales. It shouldn’t. It’ll be hard. Audience taught me that. I’ve developed a global friend circle that expresses emotions so intimately. I’m glad we’ve normalized vulnerability, and I’ve applied it to Matt.

Will your engagement last?

My indecision would stall things down. I never dreamed of a wedding. I don’t pin gowns and flowers. We should marry next year.

You see the dress?

No way. Everyone says, “Alex, don’t wear sweatpants to your wedding.” It won’t be a large dress. Princess gowns, even with sweatpants, aren’t for me.

Will you have a maid of honor, bridesmaids, etc.?

Because it’s so intimate and all my dearest friends will be present, I won’t do it. I guess I’ll do a bachelorette—I’ll let my buddies decide. Girls trips are irresistible.
