Florence Pugh on ‘free the nipple’ dress controversy 2023
Florence Pugh discussed her ‘free the breast’ fashion choices, including her sheer Valentino gown from last year.
Last July, the Don’t Worry Darling star attended Valentino’s haute couture show in Rome wearing a transparent dress. Many fans, including us, praised Florence for her body confidence, but others shamed her for freeing the nip on social media.
Florence told the New York Times that she was “surprised” by the backlash nearly a year later. “I did have a lot of positive comments, but I was surprised that people felt they were allowed to be really awful and say some disgusting things because of me showing my nipples,” she said.
“The dress was provocative but not gratuitous. “It wasn’t over-sexualized,” Florence added. “This beautiful dress and fabric showed off whatever I had underneath.”

“It isn’t the first time and certainly won’t be the last time a woman will hear what’s wrong with her body by a crowd of strangers, what’s worrying is just how vulgar some of you men can be,” she added in an Instagram post days after becoming viral during the Valentino show. Grow up. Respect others. Respect bodies. Honor ladies. Respect people. I promise life will get much easier.”
“I just could not wrap my head around the fact that showing my breasts was causing such anger — to the point where people were saying that if I got hurt, I deserved it,” Florence told the New York Times of her choice to address the response online. So I commented.”
